We have lots of VIPs (very important parents) coming to visit us in September and October, and we couldn’t be more excited.  We can’t wait to see our loved ones and explore Switzerland with them!

I’ve been spending a ton of time researching things to see and do nearby, and there is a lot!  I ended up with a list of interesting activities and sights that requires much more time than we will have with our families, but lucky for us, whatever we don’t see with our parents will turn into a list of weekend ideas for the foreseeable future.

So far, we have made arrangements for a spectacular trip to the Alps:

  • Day 1: Travel from Zürich to St. Moritz (about 4 hours)
  • Day 2: Explore St. Moritz.  Potential activities include:
    • Hiking
    • Exploring downtown
    • Rowing/canoeing/cruise on Lake St. Moritz
    • Bobsled ride
    • Sunset dinner at Muottas Muragl (2456 meters)
  • Day 3: Glacier Express from St. Moritz to Zermatt (about 8 hours)
  • Day 4: Explore Zermatt.  Potential activities include:
    • Hiking
    • Walking around town
    • Exploring Gorner Gorge
    • 5 lakes walk
    • Cable car to highest cable car station in the world (3880 meters). At the top, activities include looking at the view, snow tubing, ability to go inside the glacier, and a restaurant
    • Watching the sunrise from Rothorn (3103 meters), a nearby peak with great views
    • Train ride to Gornergrat (3089 meters), another nearby peak with great views of the Matterhorn
  • Day 5: Explore Zermatt some more, then travel home to Zürich (about 3 1/2 hours)

We’ve also discovered some really interesting things closer to home.  Right in town, there’s plenty to see and do, including:

  • National Museum, a museum of Swiss history and culture
  • Kunsthaus Art Museum, an acclaimed art museum
  • Fifa Museum, dedicated to soccer
  • Exploring the Niederdorf, the old town
  • Walk down Banhofstrasse, Zürich’s 5th Avenue, packed with high end shops
  • Stroll and/or picnic along Lake Zürich
  • Hiking around Uetliberg, a mountain overlooking Zürich with great views of the city and the mountains in the distance
  • Boat trips on Lake Zürich

We have tons of sights less than 3 hours away too, including:

  • Rapperswil (about 45 minutes away), a picturesque old town on Lake Zürich
  • Rheinfall & Stein am Rhein (within 2 hours), Europe’s largest waterfall and an picturesque medieval town
  • Einsiedeln Abbey (about 1 hour away), a beautiful Baroque abbey with a really cool looking library
  • Lucerne (about 1 1/2 hours away), a popular town on a lake with nearby mountains accessible by cable cars and cog rails
  • Mount Chäserrugg – Toggenburg (about 2 ½ hours away), a 2300-meter peak in the foothills of the Alps with a restaurant and panoramic trail at the top
  • Neuschwanstein Castle (Germany), the inspiration for the Disney castle (about 3 hours away)

We are really looking forward to an amazing three weeks with family!
